La Hire recognizes no equal in combat. The few times he has encountered someone close to his level of martial skill, they have been defeated and added to the long list of vanquished enemies. That’s why it is remarkable that, on one memorable occasion, he encountered a fierce adversary mounted on a manticore and didn’t hesitate to seize the creature as a spoils of war and a prize for his valor. Intrigued by the animal, which seemed to possess the same combat abilities as him but was equally stubborn, he dedicated a significant portion of his leisure time, much to the amazement of his companions, to breaking its spirit. The four-legged beast’s obstinacy was met with even greater determination by the bipedal one, and, thanks to the “intelligence” of the latter, along with copious amounts of shouting, uproar, arguments, and beatings, he managed to tame it enough to allow him to ride it.
